On to Brussels and Dusseldorf

Tomorrow my my wife leaves for a week-long trip to Brussels, Belgium for a conference and then on to Dusseldorf, Germany for work. She’s both nervous and excited by the fact that she’s going to a place where brewing dates back to the Middle Ages. I hope she will have the time to post news on her travels there, or at least passes it along for me to share.
As a going away treat, and to calm her nerves, we indulged ourselves in a Belgium-Style Golden Ale from Avery Brewing Co., Salvation, and a winter seasonal, 2 Below from New Belgium Brewing Company.
Salvation - Belgium-Style Golden Ale
Let’s just say we both might have found our salvation with this brew. Fruity in smell, but a touch of spiciness from the nutmeg and cinnamon make this brew almost a tasty celebratory beer. The 9% alcohol content didn’t hurt matters either. As it comes in a 22 ounce bottle you will begin to feel the alcohol kick in. According to Avery’s website, this beer is cellarable for 3 years. I don’t see how anyone can keep this beer for longer than a week. It’s too good! It’s going to be hard for me to not pick one of these big bottles up every time I hit up the local liquor store.
The mountains here in Colorado are beginning to see their first significant snow falls and as temperatures begin to fall that means the local breweries are busting out their fall/winter seasonals. 2 Below Ale is New Belgiums Fall/Winter seasonal and while it is note as spicy as most winter seasonals it will make you remember that winter is just around the corner. To me this is the epitome of a seasonal transition brew. This beer was nice to drink while watching a movie in front of the fire place. Never mind the fact that we don’t have a fireplace. It was a nice reminder of the colder, wet weather she is going to be in for in Brussels and Dusseldorf.
In the end, I know she’s going to have a great time in Brussels and I hope she does have a chance to hit up a brewpub…or two or three!
