The fighting over Colorado’s liquor laws are taking shape now with the introduction of Senate Bill 08-149 last Thursday, February 7, 2008 in the Colorado legislature. The bill, sponsored by State Senator Brandon Shaffer (D-Longmont, CO) and House Representative Jack Pommer (D-Boulder, CO), would effectively allow grocery stores to sell beer and wine in a portion of their stores. I read through the bill and although it gets the ball rolling, it appears there are significant loopholes in the bill that will not allow for local brewery and wine sales. Some of this is probably me being naive and also me not fulling knowing how distribution laws work in this state. Read more

I made beer! Let me say that again. I made beer!

My little three week science experiment came to its pinnacle today. I got a beginner’s brewing kit from my parents this past Christmas. The fine folks over at Brew at Home hooked them up with one of their Standard Homebrewing Kits that included a recipe for an Amber Ale.

Did the Pilgrims really land at Plymouth Rock because their ship ran out of beer? What is Bunging? What do you get when you order a “Bitter” in a British Pub? Do you know what a Tegestologist is?

If you have Beer Smarts you will know. My wife got me this question and answer card set over the holidays and it is pretty cool. The cards are composed of interesting questions on four sets of topics:

The set also comes with a small 16 page Beer Tips Guide.

The card set has been around for a while now and for under $20 it’s a great deal. There is a lot of information for the person new to beer and those devotees who think they know everything there is about beer. I’ve found that these cards are great just to have lying around while you enjoy your favorite brews and they would make for great conversation pieces the next time you have friends over for tasting events.

I’ve added a new “Events” page to the site.  The link is in the navigation bar next to the “About” and “Contact” links.

I’m hoping this can be used as a place to aggregate festival information, beer dinners and other brewery events that are going on.  I will be adding more going forward.  I think the calendar has pretty good functionality.  If you click on a link to an event, you will see a summary of the event details.  Click “more details” on the mini-summary it will bring up a couple additional details and some functionality.

If you know of an event please shoot me an email through the “Contact” page and I’ll get it added.

My wife and I went to the Pumphouse’s Beer Pairing Dinner last night and had a great time. What is a Beer Pairing Dinner? In general, breweries and/or brewpubs are holding these events as an introduction to enjoying quality beer with quality food. I’m seeing more and more beer pairing dinners pop up, however this was the first one we’ve been to. Having not been to an event like this, I have no idea if the menu and price the Pumphouse offered is typical or not.

We paid $40 per person. I figured that amount was not too bad for the meals below and five beers each.
